Preview of the new inventory system and search functionality
Pixel Odyssey 2.0 - Development Continues
Dear Pixel Odyssey Adventurers,
I don't like having to write this again, but Version 2.0 isn't done yet. Development has taken longer than anticipated, and I want to keep you in the loop about where things stand while sharing some exciting progress.
Behind the Scenes
Between mandatory civil service obligations in Switzerland and moving to a new apartment with my family, development time has been significantly limited. I've even struggled with getting reliable internet access at the new place – my phone works only when I'm practically leaning out the window! But surprisingly, this forced break has been beneficial. It's pulled me out of a development rut and given me a fresh perspective on the game's future.
Architecture Progress
I've made significant progress on the underlying architecture. The pipeline is finally coming together, revealing its benefits and versatility. This foundation work requires building many blocks before final assembly, which makes predicting completion dates particularly challenging for a solo developer.
Inventory System Overhaul
One of the most exciting developments is the complete redesign of the inventory system:
New Inventory Features
- •No more fixed positioning - items are now organized by category pages that are sorted logically by default
- •Text search functionality for your inventory - find items quickly and efficiently
- •Three different loadouts - save equipment configurations and switch between them seamlessly
These improvements are only possible now because of architectural changes I've implemented. Both the game data and the wiki (launched in my previous update) now draw from a unified source: Obsidian metadata. This means the JSON files for item names, along with other game data, are generated directly from the same Obsidian system that powers the wiki.
With this approach, I can make changes in one place and automatically generate updated files for both the game and the wiki with a single button press. This streamlined workflow not only enables features like inventory search but also ensures everything stays consistent and will be much easier to maintain as the game evolves.
Server Authority
Version 2.0 will also introduce stronger server authority - a significant behind-the-scenes improvement that will more thoroughly validate every game action. This ensures a fairer game environment while improving long-term stability.
Looking Forward
Building this foundation properly now will result in a better game experience and smoother future updates. Rather than rush to a release date, I'm focusing on quality and long-term stability.
I'll share more specific details as we get closer to completion. In the meantime, I'm excited about these improvements and hope you'll find them worth the wait.
Thank you for your support. The Pixel Odyssey community continues to be the driving force behind this project.
Until next time,
Lino
